About the Project
The Urban Games is the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a festival of arts, cultural expression, and games showcasing the strengths, skills, aptitudes, abilities, and passions of marginalized youth. This event is currently being designed, planned, and implemented by nine youth (aged 12–19) identified as the Youth Business Development Team, and will be held at Sir Winston Churchill Square, September 25–26, 2010. GOVERNOR GENERAL’S VISIT
On July 31, 2009, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, paid a special visit to iHuman Youth Society. She heard from Edmonton youth at risk who had been positively impacted by iHuman’s arts-based programming. There was a hands-on segment where the youth demonstrated some of their newly acquired art and music skills. Afterwards, the Governor General was invited to participate in a mask-painting workshop and song-recording session. Her visit brings to light the success of the arts in engaging youth and its ability to impact them in positive ways.
